Dori enjoys all things knitting! Whether it’s tech-editing, teaching, finishing or designing, Dori’s love of knitting shines through in everything she does.
Dori began knitting in the late 90s as a twenty-something corporate hopeful while commuting from the New Jersey suburbs into New York City. Knitting on the train fueled a passion which lead to working part-time in yarn shops after work. Her passion soon became a driving force to shift her career, prompting Dori to leave the corporate world. After several years working full time in some of the busiest yarn shops in Manhattan, Dori took the leap. She opened an instantly bustling yarn shop named Wooly Monmouth in Red Bank, a quaint town on the New Jersey Shore.
Dori owned and operated her shop from 2004-2014, earning a reputation within the knitting community for her patience and knowledge. After 10 years in business, she made the decision to close Wooly Monmouth to spend more time with her 2 young daughters. Despite, Dori’s enthusiasm for all things knitting did not wane. Her industry expertise kept her connected to the knitting world. Over time, Dori began teaching again and offering finishing services. These skills honed Dori’s understanding of pattern design and technical writing. This particular skill served her well: while test knitting a pattern, Dori was approached by the designer to do some last-minute tech editing work. This opportunity launched a new career path, as Dori quickly grew to love tech-editing. The process of collaborating with designers to help them bring their creativity to others, coupled with solving the underlying mathematical equations to have a technically sound pattern, brought a new energy to Dori’s knitting career. While Dori works with several designers, her easy temperament lends itself well to new designers who need some one who is smart and technical but still has patience and is willing to do a bit of ‘hand holding.’
When Dori’s not working, you will find her spending time with family enjoying everything from Rutgers football to skiing. Dori is a lover of all things fitness (hence the name, Fitter Knitter), with a focus on Obstacle Course Racing, Weightlifting, Mountain Biking and Nutrition.
